Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds medium to large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
  • Zest and juice from 1 orange
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together garlic, soy sauce, honey (or maple syrup), orange zest, orange juice, and crushed red pepper flakes to make the sauce.
  2. Pat shrimp dry and toss them in cornstarch until well-coated.
  3. Heat canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
  4. Fry shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  5. Drain excess oil from the pan, stir the sauce again, and add it to the shrimp.
  6. Heat the sauce with shrimp for another minute or two until thickened.
  7. Serve immediately as an appetizer or over rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.
